A saved link is not a backup: how to check your TikTok archive
Tell a bookmarked post, a pending save, and a playable backup apart with a three-point playback check.
Identify what you actually saved
There are three different objects people call a saved video: a link to the original post, a record containing its caption and thumbnail, and a copy of the media file. Only the third can play independently of the original host. A thumbnail proves that an image was loaded; it does not prove the video was copied.
In Permaloop, finding a post and transferring its media are separate steps. A post can appear in your collection while its video is still uploading. Treat an upload-in-progress message as unfinished work, not confirmation that the backup is safe. Source availability, download errors, and transfer queues can all affect completion.
Run a three-point playback check
Open the saved video, play the beginning, seek to the middle, and then seek close to the end. Check both picture and sound. A file that starts normally but stops early may be incomplete; a moving progress bar with frozen video is not a successful visual check. For a slideshow, step through every image rather than checking only the cover.
For important material you own or may download, save a local copy and open it in a separate player. After the download finishes, temporarily disconnecting from the network can confirm that the file is local rather than a shortcut to an online player. Do not disconnect during the download itself.
Keep a small verification record
A backup checklist might read: source URL; creator handle at the time; saved on September 18; duration 00:42; start, middle, and end checked; local copy opened. Keep this in a separate document or spreadsheet if your collection tool has no notes field. Do not record a post as verified just because it appears in a folder.
One useful arrangement is Needs checking, Verified, and Needs attention. Move an item only after the corresponding check. This avoids repeatedly inspecting successful saves while overlooking a stalled one at the bottom of a large import.
When a save does not finish
Reload the saved detail page once to check its latest state. If it is still pending, keep the Permaloop URL and original TikTok URL for a support report. Include whether the failure affects the cover, playback, download, or all three. Avoid repeatedly submitting an entire account to repair one item; that makes it harder to distinguish the original request from new work.
No archive can promise to recover a file it never successfully obtained. If the source disappears before transfer completes, a caption and thumbnail may be all that remain. Keep your original creator files elsewhere, and preserve only material you own or are authorized to keep. Archiving does not transfer copyright or permission to republish.
